Adaptations for people with disabilities

If you have a disability, it might make living an independent life easier by having a simple adaptation fitted in your home. These adaptations can range from having a handrail fitted or a shower over the bath.

These adaptations can only be made with a referral from Social Services and recommendation by an authorised Occupational Therapist . If you are a tenant of a Housing Association, you must also have its approval.

An information leaflet regarding Minor Adaptations To Your Home has been produced and will shortly be available from such places as

  • The County Library
  • County Hall
  • Social Services Neighbourhood Offices
  • Housing Associations

This leaflet advises on how to obtain minor adaptations to your home to help you with your daily living and independence.

It is intended for those people with either a permanent disability (your condition has either lasted a year or is likely to last a year or more) or a substantial disability (your disability significantly affects your ability to carry out tasks essential to daily living in your home) and who
  • live in and own their own home
  • privately rent their home
or
  • live in a Housing Association property

Please contact the office if you would like further information.
